National Museums Liverpool began in 1851 with the 13th Earl of Derby’s donation of his natural history collection – laying the foundation for World Museum. Over the next 170 years, the city’s museums grew into one of the UK’s largest collections, officially becoming a national institution in 1986. Today, they exist to share these incredible collections with visitors from across the globe.
Client: Museum of Liverpool
Main Contractor: FP Parkinson
Architect: DAY Interior Design
Product: Internal sails
Material: Ferrai Soltis 86
Brief
FP Parkinson approached ARC Structures to design overlapping sails which were to be installed into the atrium, to prevent the upper floors viewing the displays on the ground floor of the museum. We created a number of simple, white sails with Ferrai Soltis 86 which provide privacy without sacrificing too much natural light.
Outcome
The installation is simple, to not distract from the exhibitions, but serves the purpose to keep paying visitors from getting a view from above. The design is in keeping with the building’s modern architecture, and is an ideal addition to the ever-evolving space.
