Conic Fabric Canopy, Royal Stoke Hospital

The Royal Stoke Hospital which falls under the UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF NORTH MIDLANDS TRUST (UHNM) has recently completed a new two storey Critical Care Unit providing 12 critical care beds.

The architects scheme offered a series of small, intimate destinations, each with their own purpose including a sensory garden, a semi enclosed pergola covered space, as well as an area identified for a tensile fabric canopy that would allow patients to enjoy the garden whilst seeking refuge from the sun or rain.

Brief

ARC was approached by architects Wood|Goldstraw|Yorath architects to develop a bespoke tensile canopy to cover part of a new proposed rehabilitation garden area for the CCU.

Outcome

ARC designed, engineered, manufactured, and installed a 6 x 6m PVC single cone tensile fabric canopy to provide shelter and shade for the patients. It was imperative that steel was kept to a minimum so that the patients beds could be wheeled out from the wards into the new garden with ease.  The canopy was supported by a hot dipped galvanised steel structure with a single mast that allowed free flow of movement below.

Working alongside landscapes designers Urban Landscapes, our team had to work quickly and efficiently to cause minimal disruption on the busy hospital site. We completed the canopy installation in just three days, leaving Urban Landscapes to then create the ultimate zen garden space for patient rehabilitation.
